Channel 5 on yapFM is dedicated to John. The format is what he would have built himself: Elvis-era rock & roll, classic Niner-Faithful play-by-play vibes, and an Air Force salute at the top of every hour.
Independent personal tribute. Not affiliated with the San Francisco 49ers, the NFL, or the United States Air Force.
49 FM — Superfans (John)
COACH & SARGE in the booth. Elvis-era rock, classic 49ers, and an Air Force salute every hour.
Family, base buddies, fellow Niner Faithful — type a note and SARGE will read it on air. John's station still takes mail call.
Channel 5 — KJEH 49 FM Montana Rice Superfans — was built as a personal tribute to John, the kind of dial he would have left on all afternoon. Elvis when he wanted to dance with Julie, the Niners when it was Sunday, an Air Force salute every hour because that part of him never retired.
His life
John Earl Hall arrives June 18, 1950 to Francis and John Eugene Hall. Joins older sister Susan (later Marcelli) and brother Dennis. The Halls would settle in Fresno; John grew up a Central Valley kid — sun, agriculture, and a transistor radio that pulled in Bay Area broadcasts on a clear night.
Raised in Fresno. Joe Montana wasn't drafted yet, Elvis was on every jukebox, and the 49ers were a scrappy team waiting for their decade. The Central Valley taught John the two things that defined him: show up early, finish what you start.
Joined the United States Air Force on active duty in 1976. The first four years: EOD Bomb Dog Handler in Security Forces — the kind of work where the dog gets the credit and the handler gets the heart attacks.
Married Yol-Chu "Julie" Hall. Forty-seven years together. The kind of marriage where everybody at the base knew if Julie was coming to the cookout, you wore the good shirt.
Cross-trained from Security Forces into the Civil Engineers Corps and spent the next sixteen years building, repairing, and managing what the Air Force needed kept upright. Steady hand, dry humor, and a clipboard nobody wanted to argue with.
Final duty station: United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO. Retires from the United States Air Force at the rank of Master Sergeant after twenty years.
Ten years in Colorado Springs after Air Force retirement. Garage projects, weekend rounds at the base course, Sunday Niner games on the big set in the den. Pikes Peak out the kitchen window, the Academy chapel down the road.
Took on Base Housing Management at Little Rock Air Force Base — eight more years of Civil Service after the uniform came off. Same job ethic. Different paperwork.
Niner Faithful from the Montana-to-Rice dynasty days through every Super Bowl run. Owned the jersey before the parade. Knew the play before the snap. Yelled at the TV anyway.
John Earl Hall passes on August 20, 2025 at age 75. Survived by wife Yol-Chu "Julie" Hall, son John Hall Jr., daughters Robin Baez and Natalie Victorino, grandsons Luiz, Miguel, and Aidan Baez, step-sister Cheryl Bichlier, and his German Shepherd, Lady. Preceded by sister Susan Marcelli, brother Dennis Hall, and parents Francis & John Eugene Hall.
Places he loved
Where he grew up. Central Valley sun, Sunday Niners on AM radio, the long drive up to the Bay for a real game day.
His final active-duty station. The chapel, the parade field, Pikes Peak out every window.
Eight years of Civil Service after retirement — Base Housing Management, the long version of 'doing it right.'
Niner Faithful from the Montana-to-Rice dynasty through every Super Bowl run. Always wore the jersey.
Elvis on the speakers, the King's records on the shelf. The era he grew up in, never put away.
Where the woodworking happened. Cabinets for the family, picture frames for the grandkids, a project for every Saturday.
Between the songs
The kind of spots KJEH 49 FM would have aired between songs — base-town sponsors, Niner Faithful watch parties, family check-ins, and the moments that made John's hour feel like home.
"Vinyl pulled fresh — Elvis, Roy, Buddy, Patsy. Open until ten. Tell 'em SrA Hall sent you, he's on the wall behind the counter."
"Bay rentals, lifts, and a coffee pot that's been on since reveille. MSgt Hall says bring your own torque wrench, the loaners walk."
"Sunday kickoff at noon. Watch parties at the VFW. Bring a dish, bring a kid, bring the noise. Go Niners."
"Move-in inspections at oh-eight-hundred. MSgt (Ret.) Hall reminds you: photograph everything, sign nothing twice, and keep your receipts."
"At the top of the hour, KJEH 49 FM stands a salute for every airman past, present, and forever. Aim High."
"Honey, the dog ate the steak. The actual steak. Don't be mad. Pick up something from the chow hall on your way home. I love you."
"Dad — Steve Young just hit Rice. We're going to the Super Bowl. You hearing me?? GO NINERS!!"
"Hey Daddy. Boys made it through finals. Send the baseball cards when you can — Luiz wants the Montana rookie. Love you. Bye."
"And this one's for Lady — only dog in Arkansas who knows the snap count. Bark at the kickoff, baby."
"That's a wrap, faithful. KJEH 49 FM, Montana Rice Superfans. Dedicated to MSgt John Earl Hall, USAF 1976 to 1996. Niner Faithful forever. Aim high. Sleep good."
